Nationwide 360° imagery project will enhance the island’s global visibility, improve navigation and strengthen the visitor experience
PORT LOUIS, Mauritius – 17 July 2026 –
Mauritius is set to take a major step in its digital transformation with the launch of its first-ever Street View Imagery for Google Maps project, a nationwide initiative that will capture immersive 360-degree street-level imagery across the island and integrate Mauritius into one of the world’s most widely used digital mapping platforms.
The mapping campaign will be carried out by World Travel in 360 (WTI 360 Ltd) from 19 July to 21 August 2026. The Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority (MTPA) is providing logistical support and facilitating the necessary governmental authorisations to enable the successful deployment of the project.
Four specially equipped vehicles fitted with ultra-high-definition 360° cameras will travel across Mauritius to photograph the public road network, major tourist attractions, historical landmarks and other significant sites. Once processed and published, the imagery will become accessible through Google Maps and Google Earth, allowing users around the world to virtually explore Mauritius at street level.
Closing a Significant Digital Gap
Although Mauritius enjoys a strong international reputation as a leading island destination, it remains one of the few tourism destinations without professionally captured Street View imagery on Google Maps.
The absence of this visual layer has limited the country’s digital presence, particularly at a time when travellers increasingly rely on online research before choosing and planning their holidays. The project addresses this gap by offering future visitors an authentic preview of destinations, neighbourhoods, attractions and transport routes, helping them make more informed travel decisions.
Beyond tourism, the initiative will also improve the overall digital accessibility of Mauritius by creating an accurate visual record of its road infrastructure and public spaces.
Supporting Tourism, Businesses and Road Users
The introduction of Google Street View is expected to deliver lasting benefits across multiple sectors.
For the tourism industry, the imagery will provide an additional promotional asset, enabling hotels, guesthouses, restaurants, cultural attractions and tourism operators to become more discoverable through Google Maps and Google Search. Greater online visibility can improve customer engagement while helping businesses showcase their surroundings with greater transparency and authenticity.
For visitors, the platform will simplify trip planning by allowing travellers to familiarise themselves with destinations before arrival, increasing confidence and improving the overall travel experience.
Mauritian residents and road users will also benefit from enhanced navigation and route planning, making it easier to identify locations, assess road access and navigate unfamiliar areas. The imagery is also expected to become a valuable resource for urban planning, infrastructure management, environmental monitoring and emergency response.
A Strategic Investment in Mauritius’ Digital Future
The project reflects the growing importance of digital infrastructure in destination marketing and national development. By joining the global Street View network, Mauritius strengthens its digital competitiveness while making the destination more accessible to millions of users who rely on Google Maps every day.
Highlighting the transformative power of this digital tool, MTPA Director Benoît Harter said:
« Travel begins long before someone boards a plane. Today, people explore destinations online, compare experiences and look for reassurance before making their decision. Street View allows Mauritius to present itself exactly as it is, that is, beautiful, welcoming, authentic and easily accessible. It gives potential visitors the confidence to discover our island while also creating lasting value for our residents, businesses and tourism industry. We are putting Mauritius on the map, literally and vibrantly. This project translates physical infrastructure into global digital accessibility, ensuring that our streets, culture, and beauty are open to the world 24/7. We are proud to support an initiative that will remain a valuable digital asset for the country for years to come. »
Privacy, an utmost Priority
The Street View imagery will be collected in accordance with Google’s established privacy standards. Before publication, faces and vehicle licence plates will be automatically blurred using advanced technology to safeguard personal privacy. For further information regarding the project or the mapping schedule, the public may contact the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority by email at mtpa@intnet.mu or by telephone on 203 1900.
